Glo launches Literature Prize for undergraduate students

Yung writers in Nigerian universities will receive a cash prize of N4.5m every year from National Telecoms Operator, Globacom, courtesy of its “Glo Literature Prize for Undergraduate Students”.

This was announced at the “Evening with Wole Soyinka and Nigeria’s Outstanding Literary Stars” sponsored by Globacom and held at the weekend at the Convention Centre of Eko Hotel, VI, Lagos.

2 monarchs, one security escort kiddnaped by pirates in Bayelsa

Suspected sea pirates attacked two passenger boats and kidnapped three persons along the Ogbia to Brass waterways in Bayelsa yesterday August 26th. According to reports, the kidnapped victims, Chief Blessing Wagio and Chief Isaac Akono-Igolo, as well as an unidentified security man, were attacked around Kiberibio area of the Ogbia-Brass waterway.

The Bayelsa state police spokesperson, Asinim Butswat confirmed the incident but said detail are still very sketchy.

Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha says contrary to stories being peddled by the opposition in his state, he'd bought his private jet before becoming a governor, an indication that he did not use the state's money to buy one. The governor said this after some politicians in the state asked him to sell his private jet and use the proceed to address unpaid salaries of civil servants in the state. Okorocha's reaction is contained in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, today August 27.

Woman throws epic tantrum in a street in China after her BF dumps her by text (photos)

This Chinese woman had a public meltdown and threw an epic tantrum for 90 minutes on a street after she received a text message from her boyfriend ending their relationship. She was walking on a busy Hong Kong street when the text came in and she immediately threw herself down on the floor, screaming. A few people tried to intervene but she refused help and seemed inconsolable. After about an hour and a half of the display, paramedics were called to the scene and she was restrained and taken away on a stretcher.

Nigerian Army reinstates 2,500 soldiers and 102 officers

Over 2,500 soldiers who were dismissed or asked to withdraw from service for refusing to fight Boko Haram and other counter-insurgency offenses have been recalled by the Nigerian army. 102 officers who were facing prosecution over their involvement or lack of involvement in the fight against Boko Haram, have also been re-instated. They were re-instated by a panel set up by the Army last week.

The soldiers and officers are now retraining at the Nigerian Army Training Centre, Kontangora, Niger State

Cousins Ibrahim Nyam and Jimmy Pam were ambushed and killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen as  they were heading to Jos from Barkin Ladi last week. According to family sources, the Fulani herdsmen attacked the men and left them in the pool of their blood. Both men were married and had children. The rate of attacks in that area has been on the rise. Something needs to be done fast. May their souls rest in peace.
