The growing rate of campus prostitution
in Ghana tertiary educational institutions in the contemporary times is raising
a serious concern among Ghanaians and Nigeria association of student in various institutions.
Few weeks
ago, I set out for my usual road work at night with a very good friend of mine,
while walking pass Hot Gossip Club at Osu, I heard a female voice call my name … I decided not to answer, probably there might be someone there that bear the same name with me.
Before I could cross to the next part of the street that is opposite my house,
the same voice called my surname. Well this time, I became curios so I decided
to turn back. To my greatest surprise an
old class mates of mine way back in junior secondary school, I
was really happy seeing her but not in the kind of appearance. She gave me her number and pleaded that I call her, she was in a hurry, she was just about going out with someone.
Despite the
situation we meet I didn't made any conclusion about her, am also aware about the trends of Nigeria student prostituting
in Ghana . The following day I gave her a call, we talked for while I invited
her over so we can chat personally.
Getting to my apartment , we caught up with old times. I asked of her purpose of coming to Ghana.
.she said she wanted to experience education and life in a different country. I
also asked of the school she attends and her discipline .she mention the school and that
she is studying business administration. During our conversation she stated that
she lives in Tseaddo which is located at the Ghana Trade Fair. Again I asked her not to be bias with the
kind of questions am asking is just that I am curious, what what were you doing at
Hot Gossip Club the night we meet.. And she was like, "what's wrong with you" and she said to me, do you think you're still a kid or that you're still in Nigeria where everything you do is
been observed by your parents or people that are watching? That I should shine
my eyes ooh we are in Ghana, Where everything is possible. I tried talking her out of it, and here are
some of the questions she asked that got me thinking.
What
if i alone trains myself in school?
What
if my parents don't send enough?
What
if my parents are not available whenever am in need?
What
happens to hard times?
What
happens to peer group influence in times of need?
Again I said to her, even in success there are hard times
What happens to self-endurance?
What happens to self-esteem?
What happens to determination which
leads to success?
What happened to your dreams as a
baby?
What happens to life basic principles?
Today is another day to make things right.
It's Amazing how
Nigerians youth sees Ghana as a free ticket to misbehave and spend their lives jumping from one man to another just because of Money!
Most Nigeria student
who practice prostitution in Ghana are not aware of their action, some feel it
just a means to get money to keep body and soul, some don't engage in it until
they are broke, some are being led by peer group (bad influence). However, the
parents have a share of blame for not educating their children on sex education
before letting them go to the outside world. They feel that educating their ward
about sex is likely to expose them more to it, which is absolutely wrong.
Furthermore
, following the high amount of Nigeria students prostituting in
Ghana, I am on the opinion that parents should communicate with their children often, give them moral support and also see to it that they don't jump into someone older than them because of money. And also that the government of Ghana should see to it that the high rate of prostitution in Ghana be eradicated or it should be legalized whereas a student would not be given the license to prostitute no matter the condition she found herself .
